Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp
Set amongst vast desert plains and rugged mountains with views of the dunes in the distance, the lodge offers close access to Sossusvlei as well as privacy and exclusivity. Most of the surroundings are devoid of vegetation, with the exception of the occasional Moringa tree standing sentinel among the rocks.
Building style is rock, timber and thatch and the nine comfortable chalets are recessed into the face of a low hill, ensuring a high degree of comfort and protection against the elements, yet providing a panoramic view of the plains below. The development was planned in such a way that each chalet is completely private, making curtains unnecessary. The en-suite bathrooms have both hot and cold running water, showers and flush loos and each chalet features a private plunge pool.
Elevated walkways connect the chalets with the main lodge, which comprises 'The Barking Ghecko' bar, lounge and dining room. Alternatively - providing the weather is fine - a spacious outside verandah sets a humble stage for a dinner under the stars. Activities are varied, with experienced guides bringing the desert to life during drives, walks and the early morning drive to Sossusvlei where breakfast is enjoyed under the camel-thorn trees.
An optional extra is to see the sun changing the colours of dunes and mountains at dawn from a hot-air balloon (take-off at Sesriem). Splendid service, the elevated location and attention to detail make a stay-over at this up-market lodge a memorable experience.
