Sossusvlei Lodge

Situated at the entrance to the Namib-Naukluft Park at Sesriem this 'desert hotel' blends with the environment as naturally as the majestic dunes of Sossusvlei. Showing great imagination and sensitivity to the magnificent landscape, the architects of the lodge incorporated many innovative features.

The building style is a combination of permanent brick structures and desert-coloured canvas materials. Each of the 45 bedrooms has a view of the ridges of the Naukluft Mountains and across the vast plains dotted with camel-thorn trees. Lighting is solar powered, while only showers are used, serving as a constant reminder of Namibia's most precious commodity - water. Instead of air-conditioning, the double canvas ceilings have a ventilation gap as used by the desert nomads of old to ensure ventilation. Furnishings at the lodge are hand-crafted with a distinct bushmen theme throughout.

The cuisine is German/Namibian and the ambience that of being one with nature. In the early dawn and when the sun sets late in the afternoon the changeless yet ever-moving sea of sand comes to life. Balloon safaris and 4x4 trails provide a fascinating perspective of nature at its most inventive.
